The Importance of a Product Photographer

Let me start by saying that Sarah, my product photographer, is a godsend to this company.  She started in 2021 when this business was in my home. Her “studio” was a cramped corner in my basement.  I had actually interviewed her two years before I hired her. At that point, I knew I needed a product photographer, but I wasn’t quite there yet.  I had not forgotten about Sarah. I was finally ready to reach out to her, and she took the job immediately. She has been with us for 3+ years. Sarah said she came onboard because she sensed the passion I have for my growing business.  And boy, has it grown. Now we are in a new building with a warehouse and Design Center, and Sarah has a real photography area. ​

Sarah earned her BA in Commercial and Fine Art photography from Columbia College of Chicago. She is a first generation American. Her parents came here from Minsk. Her interest in photography was influenced by her father, who loved taking photos.  Her mom would develop them in their bathroom. Sarah said she loves being behind the camera rather than in front. She has done wedding photography and portrait photography.  And her creative flair was also fulfilled by working as a florist for many years. She feels that her input and being part of the process at Dish & Decor is gratifying. 

What does Sarah do at Dish & Decor?  Of course, she takes clean and clear photos of all of our rental pieces alone or in combination with the crisp white background. Since many of our items are vintage, she doesn’t correct the imperfections because that is part of their charm.  She does color check when she edits. Plus, she labels each piece for our website. In addition, Sarah listens to the vision of Dish & Decor and our fellow vendors when doing a photo session whether here in our Design Center or in another venue. Always being sure to contribute to the session to highlight everyone’s strengths and vision is her focus. Sarah also works with our blogger; by taking photos of the things that she needs for social media and blogs. 

We’ve come a long way, baby, here at my Dish & Decor biz.  When I started up this company, I was taking orders, delivering, washing, repacking, and doing marketing. I was also taking photos of my products. Doing it all.  I am so thankful to have Sarah on my team. She has made all of my carefully curated items look the best that they possibly can be which allows my clients to see just how special these rentals are.
